Reflection is the process of reflecting (i.e. of remembering or recalling what you experienced).
Evaluation is the process of evaluating of that reflected experience (i.e. of judging what worked and/or what didn't from that experience).
How has your research into the context topic helped with your production?
How has your research into documentary modes helped with the development of your project?
Could you have done further primary or secondary research?
What were your strengths from this project?
What could you have done to improve?
Discuss the solutions you put in place while making your documentary? From pre production to post production
What have you learnt from the process? What skills have you developed and learnt?
What did you feel about your final film? Is it how you wanted it to be?
What is next in your development? Your next project?
Gibbs' Reflective Cycle was developed in 1988 to give structure and to help when reflecting on things that have been learnt. It was broken down in to 6 levels, these are:
Your Description of the experience
Your Feelings and thoughts about the experience
An Evaluation of the experience, both pros and cons
Your Analysis to make sense of the situation
A Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently
Your Action plan for how you would deal with similar situations in the future, or general changes you might find appropriate.
This is just one model of reflection. You are more likely to engage critically with your learning experience.
The first step is to describe what you know. Ask yourself the following questions:
What were you asked to do?
Who was involved?
What did you do? What did others do?
How were you feeling at the time?
Were there time limits or expectations from the tasks?
Were there any known or perceived difficulties with the activity, timing, location, information or resources etc.?
What was good and bad about the experience
How might the facts and feelings (from stage 1 and 2 above) have affected your actions/behaviour
What other circumstances may have affected your progression on the tasks?
How issues might influence the activity or practice related feedback?
Why you picked this to reflect on?
What is the main development point on the future?
What have you discovered?
What have you learned from this and circumstances?
What questions remain?
You have analysed the activity and want to make sure you improve your practice for next time, so need to move into the action planning stage:
What will I do differently from now on or the next time this arises?
What resources/help will you need?
