Getting our structure right first:
The following site and folder will help give you an idea of what is needed for the FMP and serve as a guide for when we leave you feedback weekly. If you should have a section completed it will be the subpages on the right we will refer too.
For your FMP site add these page names, one page per : (include names and numbers please)

Now as a group we are going to access the assignment brief and take a look at the tasks and key dates you need to be aware of throughout this project:
Note the following on the whiteboard in teams and make a record for you to keep:
What are the keydates?
How many tasks are there in the brief?
Where do I find the learning outcomes to achieve a pass/merit/distinction?
Case studies form part of your secondary research, learning from other filmmakers and reflecting is a brilliant skill - this case study can be used in your secondary research so make sure you complete all the questions below and take in all the information.
Watch the video here by David F Sandberg (Director) Reflect on these questions and put this on the initial ideas page, as a "before I start thinking of ideas advice from the industry"...
What does he say about the amount of characters in a film?
How would the information about characters help your idea planning?
Why is audio important in Sandbergs' opinion?
How can you do better audio if not capturing it on set?
How do you keep up energy in your project?
What % should you aim for and why is this important?
What is the problem you will have with the first cut?
How can you keep motivated and avoid feeling 'depressed' as Sandberg notes?
The key with an initial idea, is that it never goes beyond a concept. This gives you a lot of flexibility, as you are only highlighting what the video could be...
Give yourself parameters and stick to them... FILM is full of parameters - genre and narrative are good starters.
So if you set a horror genre before a concept there are specific codes and conventions you must adhere to, with the genre for the concept to make sense! This is the same if you consider documentary modes or decide to make a film trailer.
5 mins: Parameters to help generating ideas
List as many different parameters you can think of in video production.
Genre e:g. horror
Set time e:g. 5 minutes
15mins: How do the pro's do it - finding examples of how concepts are written.
Find your favourite film on IMDB - look for the synopsis/ plot/ blurb.
Read it and break it down, how is the information constructed?
Make sure you do this when creating your own synopsis/plot/ blurb for each of your own initial ideas.
Aim: Get creative and imaginative
Objectives: Create ideas for final major project
Participate in idea generation techniques
Come up with your own ideas, starting with 5 then narrowing down to 1 solid idea
Let's all get involved in generating some ideas!
Remember it is only an idea, you don't need to think too much into the technical side just yet. Set the scene, how many characters are there, where is your scene, any significant props and of course the narrative.
If you struggle with coming up with ideas, use the first activity of generating an idea from an object, take this concept into your life. Observe people at the bus stop, create a narrative for them. Brainstorm ideas with your friends and see where it takes you.
Most importantly make a product you want to see!
Make a product you are passionate about. Chose a topic which interests you.
Working in groups is so vital for the film production industry, this is great practice for you to work with people you wouldn't normally work with.
In your groups, we are going to generate ideas for specific products and themes which I will give you.
You all have 20 minutes to come up with an idea and to pitch this idea to me.
Your pitch must be 1 minute long, so think about how you can fit everything into 1 minute pitch.
Tips: This is an idea stage so don't think about the technical side.
Use some film language you have learnt if it applies to your ideas.
Make notes on these tips and tricks to help you get started.
Think about:
What you have available to you
The type of product you want to make.
Ensure your idea has a 3 act structure.
Be realistic.
Use the basic principles of a product: Idea-Concept- Planning-Narrative-Character-Location- Filming- Editing-Product- Distributed
Think about where you want to distribute your product
Now it's over to you
Use this template and make one for yourself.
Save it in your Final Major Project Folder
If you are 100% on an idea then make 4 back up idea in case your main idea can't be achieved.
If you have no idea where to start think about the different media products available: Short film, documentary, music video, tv advert, tv pilot episode, mockumentary, visual podcast....
Then think about what you enjoy watching and/or what you would enjoy planning and filming.
Think about if it is realistic/feasible.
If there are obvious problems with your idea, how can we overcome them with creative solutions.
