Since the early Homo sapiens, humanity has been creating art. We began with finger painting on cave walls and have since discovered a multitude of ways to express ourselves artistically. Art allows us to translate what we feel and experience into a form of creative expression. The beautiful thing about art is that you can both create and immerse yourself in it. You can attend museums, draw, listen to music, sing, etc. The possibilities are endless so long as you allow them to be.
You might hear people say that they “are not a math person”, “not a history person”, “not creative”, etc. Oftentimes people believe that they cannot be a certain “type of person” if they do not inherently obtain a given skill set. This is ridiculous. Who is to say that we are only allowed to enjoy or partake in something if we are automatically good at it? Furthermore, if we never give ourselves the space to fail, then we will never grow or improve.Besides, art is subjective, so what one person might think is horrible, another might fully resonate with. That's part of the beauty of art, people can agree to disagree. I personally love abstract art while some people believe it is pointless. Moreover, there are so many different art styles that it's pointless to compare one to another when each has something different to offer. Which is exactly why telling yourself that you are not an “art person” is so limiting. Especially when there are so many types of art. Additionally, art has the ability to teach us so much about ourselves and life.
Personally, art has taught me the importance of patience and self discovery. I grew up around art because my dad is an artist. We used to sit together and draw when I was little. I think the most important lesson this taught me was the beauty of having a passion outside of what one does for work. My dad, being a lawyer but also an artist, has made me rethink the paradigm of the one-track life. After all, people are more than their professions and we don’t live to work. We work to live. This is extremely important to keep in mind, especially with the pressures put on us high school students today.
In high school it can feel like everything you are involved in should relate to your intended major in college. While there are obvious positives of applying oneself in school and being involved in one’s community, being well versed in only one area of life denies people the opportunity of exploring all that life has to offer. I encourage you to discover who you are outside of what job you want to have. Find a hobby that you enjoy and meet new people in the process!
If you are interested in becoming more involved in the arts at Carondelet and De La Salle be sure to check out the Visual and Performing Artsclasses offered. Speaking of classes, Spirituality in the Arts is a religion elective offered senior year taught by none other than Dr. Trinidad, the Winton Oracle’s moderator! Be sure to look into taking his class. Other opportunities in the arts on campus include joining Company (our schools theatre group), the National Arts Honor Society (along with many other art focused clubs), attending/participating in the Winton Arts Film Festival on March 6th, 2026, and by submitting your art to the Winton Oracle to be featured in the school paper!
