Exciting News:

This morning I shared with the students that I am expecting my first baby in December. I waited to share this news because there is so much going on during the first few days of school, but I wanted to let you know that I will be out on maternity leave starting after winter break, and will return after spring break. I am very excited, and will be working very hard on routines and procedures during these first few weeks to establish a strong learning community that will carry on while I am out on leave.

ELA: This week teachers will be meeting with students individually to assess their reading and begin planning for instruction. In class, we are introducing center routines and expectations, and practicing working independently for an extended period of time. The word pattern we will be working on during word study will focus on short vowel sounds. The words for the week are: after, under, just, think, and little. Since we will spend a lot of time this week modeling procedures and routines, we will also be using these words next week as well. During read aloud we will be focusing on how to describe a character using examples from the story.

Math: This week we will be starting Chapter One from Math in Focus, which is Numbers to 1,000. We will be reviewing place value terms, making number patterns, and creating numbers using base ten blocks. Our goals this week will be to focus on reviewing place value terms from first grade and introducing and modeling center routines and expectations.

Social Studies: We will be starting Lesson 1 for Social Studies, which focuses on different kinds of communities. This goes along with Module 1 in ReadyGen, where students will be reading "Friends Around The World." This week we will be defining a community as a place where people live and work together. We will be especially focusing on our classroom community as we continue to practice our routines and expectations.

Library: Library will begin this week on Tuesday

Gym: Please remember to send in or wear gym shoes and socks on Tuesday and Friday each week.

  5. Calendar Reminder: September 14: Fall Family Fun Night 6:30-8:00

What are We Learning This Week?:

Math: We will continue working on Unit 1 this week, which focuses on numbers 1-1,000. We will continue to review place value terms, making number patterns, and creating numbers using base ten blocks. Our biggest focus for this week will be to have students show numbers in all three forms: standard form, word form, and expanded form.

Students will soon have access to TenMarks. This week I will be sure to staple their login information on the 1st page of their assignment notebook so that they can access this at home.

ELA: This week during ELA we will begin our first unit of study titled "Understanding Communities." We will be starting with a non-fiction text called "Friends Around the World." In this unit, students will be learning how to identify the main topic of a text. We will also be focusing on identifying non-fiction text features and comparing and contrasting communities.

Word Study Words: The pattern for this week will focus on short vowel sounds. Our words are after, under, little, just, and think.

Social Studies: Chapter 1 goes along with our ELA unit, and discusses different types of communities. Last week, we focused on our classroom community as we brainstormed rules for our classroom. We discussed why rules are important, and what we need to do to make sure that our classroom is safe and productive. Please review the rules we created with your child tonight. They brought home an illustrated book in their blue folder. Our biggest focus right now as we work to establish our classroom community is Rule Number 1: Listen and follow directions quickly.

This week, we will continue to discuss our classroom community, but we will also move outside of our classroom and discuss community as the town where we live. We will define and brainstorm examples of laws, and consider why we have them. I also hope to introduce the terms: urban, suburban, and rural.

Science: We will be alternating between science and social studies blocks. We will finish 2 units of Social Studies before moving on to our first science unit.

September 10, 2018

Reminders/Helpful Info:

September 10: Students will run through Expectation Stations with staff members around the school to review expectations for different areas of the building (ie playground, cafeteria, bathrooms, etc).

September 13: Back to School Night 6:30-8:00

September 14: Fall Family Fun Night 5:30-7:30; School Spirit Day--students can wear gear to support their favorite sports team, or they can wear Central gear!

**Tomorrow we will have library. Please send back library books so that they can be renewed or exchanged for new books.

**Tomorrow we also have PE. Please remind students to have socks and gym shoes on Tuesdays and Fridays so that they can participate in PE.

What are We Learning This Week?:

Math: This week we will continue our study of numbers to 1,000. Students will be using the terms greater than, less than and equal to when comparing numbers, as well as sorting numbers in sequence from least to greatest and greatest to least. We will also be working in small groups to review identifying number patterns in groups of numbers and describing numbers using standard, word and expanded form. We will also be rolling out math centers this week, so along with academic content we will be reviewing expectations and routines for what this small group instruction time will look like.

ELA: This week during ELA we will continue identifying non-fiction text features as we read Friends Around the World. We will also be reviewing sequence words, and how to use them when retelling a story. During writing we will continue to review adjectives, and will be using them to describe the different communities from our anchor text.

Word Study Words: This week we are continuing to work with the short vowel word pattern. Our words for the week are answer, end, follow, must and picture.

Social Studies: This week we will focus on the characteristics of an urban, suburban and rural community. This will go along with our ELA anchor text, "Friends Around the World." Students will be illustrating traits that can be found in each of these communities.

Science: We will be alternating between science and social studies blocks. We will finish 2 units of Social Studies before moving on to our first science unit.

Have a great week!

Reminders/Helpful Info:

Tomorrow is Picture day!!!

*Don't forget to send in your picture order forms unless you are doing them online

We will not have library this week due to picture day, so students can hang on to their books for one more week.

Wednesday September 26th- First ELA assessment--there is no study guide for ELA assessments. I am looking to see if students can independently apply the reading strategies we are working on in class.

Thursday September 27th- First Social Studies assessment

What are We Learning This Week?:

Math: This week we are starting Chapter 2, which is Addition to 1,000. As we get started we will be reviewing addition strategies including: making ten, doubles, and doubles plus one. Our main focus this week will be adding three digit numbers without regrouping.

ELA: This week students will take their first reading assessment. This assessment will be read aloud to them, and will provide me with information as to whether they can independently apply the strategies we have been working on in class. During this unit we have been working on identifying main idea and details using short sections from Friends Around the World. We will be reviewing this skill using other passages as we prepare for the assessment. We will also be focusing quite a bit of class time modeling and preparing our first PBA, which puts all of the writing strategies we have been working on together into one prompt. Students will be asked to compare and contrast two communities from the text Friends Around the World. We will be working through the writing process together to brainstorm, draft, edit and publish their work.

Word Study Words: This week we will be identifying words that follow the CVCe pattern. We will be discussing that the -e at the end of the word causes the short vowel to become long. Our words for the week are home, place, cute, these, write.

Social Studies: This week we will be wrapping up our discussion on communities from Chapter 1, and will be taking the chapter assessment on Thursday. Today for homework students were asked to study their "Me On the Map" project. I modeled for them how to do this, and said that they will probably be focusing on what state, country and continent they are a part of from the book. On Tuesday, students will complete a more formal study guide in class, and will bring it home in their blue folders to review for homework.

Our next chapter will build on our discussions of community and will focus on geography and different landforms. We will be taking a closer look at how and where people live as we define the term ancestor, and what types of resources can be found on Earth.

Science: We will be alternating between science and social studies blocks. We will finish 2 units of Social Studies before moving on to our first science unit.

October 10, 2018

What are We Learning This Week?:

Math: This week students will continue working with strategies to use when adding three digit numbers that require regrouping in the ones, tens, and hundreds place. Similarly to last week, students will likely have math homework a few days this week in order to provide further opportunities for them to practice the skill independently. We will also be sending home the completed review guide on Thursday for students to look over and study for the chapter test on Tuesday, October 16.

ELA: This week we will continue working with our anchor text, Trouble at the Sandbox to identify author's purpose and point of view. We will also continue our discussion of sequence words, and use them to retell key events from our story. During writing, students will be identifying dialogue, and practicing incorporating it into their response to text.

Word Study Words: Since we have another short week we are using our word study time to add in additional practice with common nouns and proper nouns. Students helped me brainstorm the list of words, and they will be working to write complete sentences for each word during center time. The words chosen were: cat, Felix, city, Chicago, teacher, Mrs. Fendrich, game and RUSHHOUR.

Social Studies: This week we will be describing the differences between a producer and a consumer. If time allows, we may also begin discussions about natural resources and conservation. This will be the last chapter before we transition to science for the remainder of the trimester.

Science: We will be alternating between science and social studies blocks. We will finish 2 units of Social Studies before moving on to our first science unit.

During our first investigation we will be creating a system using a plastic bottle, tubes, a rubber stopper and two syringes to use air pressure to push the water around the system. During the second investigation students will submerge an open vial containing a small piece of paper towel and a foam ball into water to show what will happen to the air inside the vial.

SEL: We started off the year really focusing our discussions around what it means to have a growth mindset. As students have been met with difficult content, I have continued to emphasize that challenges help us grow, and that mistakes help us learn. In the last few weeks we have also really been focusing on problem solving strategies, and how to express frustration using an "I Statement." To build on this concept, our upcoming SEL discussions will focus on empathy, and how students can understand another's perspective. We will be talking about "warm words" as we get into the colder season, and how the choice and tone of our words can affect others and our relationships.
