Overview

"The most disrespected woman in America, is the Black Woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black Woman. The most neglected person in America, is the Black Woman" ~Malcolm X

As a means to affirm and empower as well as humanize black girls in our school, the  Black Girl Magic Book Club was created.

“My parents have taught me the value of reading and self-love through books that have characters that look like me and talk like me.” ~Marley Dias

Students learn best when they are interested in the material they’re learning, and in the case of students’ literacy skills, they improve most when reading books they can relate to and by recreationally reading outside of the classroom.  The books featured in this club will follow themes provided by the Guiding Principles of the Black Lives Matter movement which are diversity, restorative justice, globalism, queer affirming, unapologetically Black, collective value, empathy, loving engagement, transgender affirming, Black villages, Black families, intergenerational and especially Black Woman.  All books featured in this club will have a Black girl identifying protagonist across a wide range of genres.

“Black girl stories aren't just for black girls: they're for everybody.” ~ Marley Dias

This Book Club is open to any and all 3rd - 5th grade students interested.  Join us for a year-long exploration of books while reflecting on our own stories and identity development to build positive self-esteem, self-image, and self-worth!
