Bus duty is an important job responsibility. Although there are slight differences between the schools, there are several things to consider and be aware of.
- All students are the responsibility of the school from the time the student leaves his/her home to the time the student returns back to his/her home.
- Students are expected to board the bus in an orderly fashion.
- While on the bus, students are expected to follow school rules of being safe, respectful, and responsible.
- Assistants are expected to deliver and pick up students to and from their appropriate buses in a timely manner as to not unnecessarily hold up the bus route or to delay students getting to class.
- Assistants should take great care especially with younger students to ensure the students are on the correct bus and that the driver is aware of the student's address.
- In the event that a student says he/she should be doing something different than the normal dismissal procedure for that student, the assistant should NOT take the word of the student alone. The assistant must check with the office staff/teacher to confirm or question how the child is getting home.
- Assistants should provide help to ensure students can safely get on and off the bus. For example, help a student organize belongings so that the student's hands are free to grab the handrail.
- NEVER allow a student to walk closely behind the bus.
- Students going to a different address may have a bus pass. The bus pass must be given to the driver.
- In certain cases you may be asked to ride a bus route at which time you would receive more information about specific responsibilities.
