The Music Room
Some of the classes will be looking at canons, fugues, and rounds. One fantastic piece, with great visuals, is this: Johann Sebastian Bach's "Little" Fugue in g minor. Watch, listen, and see if you can follow the subject as it moves from one range to another.
Scheherezade (shuh-hair-uh-zaw-duh) is the female story teller in the book One Thousand and One Nights, which includes stories about Aladdin, Sinbad, and Ali Baba. She used a story each night to trick the king into sparing her life. In the end, after 1,000 stories, she runs out of stories to tell, but by then, the king has fallen in love with her, so she is spared. This piece, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, uses music to depict some of those stories. The conductor is Valery Gergiev and the orchestra is the Vienna Philharmonic. Grades 2 and 3 are using this piece to study the orchestra, but this piece can be enjoyed by all grades (it happens to be one of my favorites). Happy listening!
