Many surrounding communities are within an easy commute to Portland's city center. The city of Portland lies within 3 counties: Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington.
Outlying Oregon communities within easy or reasonable commute are in these three counties plus two other counties that are nearby:
Clackamas County is located East of Portland and South of Portland along the Willamette River. A part of Portland is in Clackamas County and there are sixteen additional incorporated cities within its borders: Barlow, Canby, Damascus, Estacada, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Johnson City, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Molalla, Oregon City, Rivergrove, Sandy, Tualatin, West Linn, Wilsonville. Columbia County is located Northwest of Portland along the Columbia River. It is home to seven incorporated cities: Clatskanie, Columbia City, Prescott, Rainier, Scappose, St. Helens, and Vernonia.
Multnomah County is Oregon's smallest county in physical size, but it is also Oregon's most populated county. At its center is Oregon's largest city, Portland. In addition to Portland, there are five other incorporated cities in Multnomah County: Fairview, Gresham, Maywood Park, Troutdale, and Wood Village.
Washington County is located southwest of downtown Portland and includes a part of Portland, as well as fourteen other incorporated cities: Banks, Beaverton, Cornelius, Durham, Forest Grove, Gaston, Hillsboro, King City, North Plains, Rivergrove, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, and Wilsonville. Yamhill County is home to Amity, Carlton, Dayton, Dundee, Lafayette, McMinnville, Newberg, Sheridan, Willamina, and Yamhill.
