Paper on Basque Linguistics in Honour of Jon Franco

All we ever look for (are agents?)
Dr. Laka's talk explores the interaction of grammatical properties with processing mechanisms. It is centered around the agent preference and how it modulates language and sentence processing. Sentence processing in Basque and Spanish is modulated by case marking, yielding different effects for instance in intransitive clauses depending on the theta role borne by the argument. These experimental results take us back to a classical problem in Linguistics, concerning the status of the category "subject". Sentence processing is strongly driven by a search for agents.
