Researchers have explored various motivational theories, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Locke’s Goal-Setting Theory, to understand how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence an individual's drive to achieve their goals (Brown & Taylor, 2023). In the context of visual arts, studies have highlighted how artists’ creative processes are shaped by personal experiences, emotional resilience, and social environments (Nguyen, 2021). Acrylic painting, introduced in the 1950s, has been widely used in contemporary art due to its flexibility and adaptability (Rodriguez, 2020). Many artists have leveraged its properties to experiment with bold colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and mixed-media techniques to convey deep narratives (Davis, 2022). Some notable works have focused on depicting human emotions, struggles, and triumphs, underscoring the potential of acrylic painting as a storytelling medium (Singh, 2023). However, while extensive research has been conducted on acrylic painting techniques and artistic motivation separately, fewer studies have specifically examined how the stories of local artists can be visually represented through this medium.
Despite the wealth of existing literature on motivation and artistic expression, there remains a gap in the exploration of local artists' success narratives through acrylic painting. While famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Frida Kahlo have immortalized individuals through portraiture and symbolic imagery, there is limited research on how contemporary local artists’ experiences can be captured in an acrylic painting (Lee, 2020). Most studies on artist success focus on quantitative measures, such as career milestones and financial stability, rather than the personal inspirations and struggles that drive artistic growth (Williams, 2021). Additionally, while Carmen Herrera’s use of acrylic paint in post-World War II Europe has been analyzed in the context of innovation, there is little discussion on how acrylic paintings can serve as visual testimonies of an artist’s journey (Miller, 2022). This study aims to fill this gap by creating an acrylic painting that encapsulates the story of a local artist’s challenges and triumphs, offering a new perspective on the intersection of motivation, creativity, and personal storytelling in visual arts.
This production study seeks to document and artistically represent the life and success of a local female artist from Santa Barbara through an acrylic painting on canvas. The study will explore how motivation, inspiration, and perseverance have shaped her artistic journey, using visual elements to communicate her story. Additionally, it will include an in-depth interview with the artist to gain firsthand insight into her experiences, aspirations, and struggles. The final artwork will serve as both a tribute to the artist’s journey and a source of inspiration for aspiring creatives facing similar challenges. By integrating artistic practice with research, this study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on motivation and artistic success, emphasizing the power of visual storytelling in preserving and celebrating the narratives of local artists.
