Celebrating Pride Month: A Step Toward a More Inclusive and Gender-Responsive Workplace
June 29, 2026 | via Microsoft Teams
The month of June became more vibrant and meaningful as the Regional Office joined the celebration of Pride Month, a celebration of identity, diversity, respect, and human dignity. More than the colorful attire worn every Thursday, the celebration served as a reminder that inclusivity is not only seen in symbols and events, but also in the way people understand, accept, and support one another.
Anchored on DepEd Order No. 32, s. 2017, otherwise known as the Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy, the Pride Month Celebration emphasized the continuing commitment of the Department of Education to promote gender equality, non-discrimination, and a safe environment for all. Through the Human Resource Development Division - National Educators Academy of the Philippines in the Region, the activity created a space where Regional Office personnel could learn more about Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, LGBTQIA+ rights, and gender diversity.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Lunch and Learn session held on June 29, 2026. The activity gathered Regional Office personnel through Microsoft Teams and provided an opportunity to reflect, listen, and engage in meaningful conversations. It began with a prayer, followed by a message from Assistant Regional Director Loida N. Nidea, who emphasized that the celebration was an opportune time to understand one another better. Her message reminded everyone that building an inclusive workplace begins with openness, respect, and the willingness to learn.
The session became even more meaningful through the discussion of Mr. Joshua Mari B. Lumbera, a Registered Psychometrician and graduate student in General Psychology major in Sikolohiyang Pilipino at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He introduced important concepts on sex and gender and explained the GenderBread Person as a helpful tool in understanding the different parts of a person’s identity. Through his discussion, participants were reminded that gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, and attraction are different but equally important aspects of human experience.
The learning session also highlighted the value of respectful language, empathy, and avoiding assumptions. It encouraged participants to see inclusivity not as a one-day activity, but as a daily practice reflected in words, actions, policies, and workplace relationships.
Another engaging part of the activity was the sharing session with office-based resource persons, including Mr. Jomari U. Jovellar, Technical Assistant from the Education Support Services Division, and Mr. Michael Girard R. Alba, Chief of the FTAD. Through open conversation, they shared insights and experiences related to LGBTQIA+ inclusion, workplace challenges, discrimination, and the importance of creating safe and respectful spaces for all.
Questions raised during the discussion allowed participants to reflect on real-life concerns, such as inclusive facilities, experiences of discrimination, and how offices can better support members of the LGBTQIA+ community. These conversations helped deepen the participants’ understanding that inclusion requires both awareness and action.
Overall, the Pride Month Celebration was more than a festive observance. It was a meaningful reminder that every person deserves to be seen, heard, respected, and valued. It strengthened the advocacy for gender equality and human rights, while encouraging Regional Office personnel to contribute to a workplace where everyone can feel safe and accepted.
As the celebration concluded, one message remained clear: Pride Month is not only about celebrating diversity, but also about continuing the work of building a more compassionate, respectful, and gender-responsive community for all.
