"FNES: We care, we share, For the future we prepare". Three committed multi-grade teachers with the same mission and vision: developing good values, improving skills and help pupils apply what they learn to real-life experiences. The school focuses on the improvement of learners to become an actively growing, achieving and responsible citizens of the future.
A pearl buried inside a tightly-shut shell is practically worthless. Government information is a pearl, meant to be shared with the public in order to maximize its inherent value. The Transparency Seal, depicted by a pearl shining out of an open shell, is a symbol of a policy shift towards openness in access to government information. On the one hand, it hopes to inspire Filipinos in the civil service to be more open to citizen engagement; on the other, to invite the Filipino citizenry to exercise their right to participate in governance.
This initiative is envisioned as a step in the right direction towards solidifying the position of the Philippines as the Pearl of the Orient a shining example for democratic virtue in the region.
Perspectives from a Leader-Teacher
In a multi-grade classroom, learners are being combined with learners of various ages and grade levels, especially in geographically challenged areas and where enrollment rates are low, which is not precisely the ideal or familiar set-up for learning and teaching, with each student working towards their individual curriculum goals for their grade level. They are learning simultaneously, both together and apart.
For Mrs. Sonialyn U. Alvarez, Teacher of Finugo Norte Elementary School, being a school head and, at the same time, a multi-grade teacher is a manifestation of strong dedication and commitment to the teaching profession. As fondly called by her pupils and colleagues, Ma'am Sonia wears a variety of hats and uses her passion and talents to end illiteracy. Known for her knowledge-oriented but sympathetic approach, her experiences as an administrator and a classroom teacher, made her a multi-awarded educator. She gushed that “teaching in the multi-grade class exhibits the art and the science of pedagogical principles. It should be coupled with compassion. In multi-grade setting, I need to attain several learning competencies in single teaching execution. It is a blessing for I touch the souls of many people. To see my pupils learn and develop is a wonderful and gratifying experience. Knowing that I've made a difference in their lives is invaluable to me.”
In 2017, she was adjudged as Semi-Finalist as Outstanding Multi-grade Teacher Category in the Saludo Educators Award of 2017 for her laudable and undisputed devotion to Outstanding Educators. The award was given last October 13, 2017, during the Grand Awarding Ceremonies for the Search for outstanding Employees in Celebration of the National Teacher’s Month and World Teacher’s Day help at the University of Cagayan Valley Greyhounds Gymnasium, Tuguegarao City. The award was bestowed by Dr. Leila P. Areola, CESO VI, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, OIC- Office of the Schools Division Superintendent. This award was given last September 2017 during the celebration of Teacher’s Day in Lasam, Cagayan. At the district level, Mrs. Sonialyn U. Alvarez was the most outstanding teacher (Multi-grade Category) of Lasam East district for SY 2017-2018.
Ma’am Sonia sweetly said, "these awards and recognitions are dedicated to my school, to my family, and most of all to God Almighty. I am a firm believer that a successful educator understands that teaching involves a reciprocal relationship with learners. Multi-grade teaching is not only the greatest challenge in my career as a teacher; it is also my most fulfilling and significant accomplishment. Having immersed myself in the community, I became even more determined to master my craft, so I can make a difference in the lives of my learners.”
Ma’am Sonialyn believes that being open-minded and listening to one’s pupil is vital to effective instruction. She firmly adhered that to gain respect, one must give it; there is no better place where this can be observed than in the classroom. Pupils can tell when a teacher is passionate about the material, and similarly, pupils can tell when a teacher truly cares about them. As a staunch advocate of public education, she thinks that a public-school teacher may help shape a country by putting more attention on the strengths of Filipino learners and less on the many problems that confront the public education system.
