Why Should We Go to School at Age Five
In the earlier days, our parents would fondly tell stories about their early years. Some would happily recall that they didn’t attend Kindergarten class and went to Grade 1 immediately.
However, with the implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum. Pupils before entering Grade 1 are required to attend Kindergarten at the age of five. Why did the trend become like this, let us look at the three main reasons of the importance of undergoing the Universal Kindergarten Program.
ADJUSTMENT TO FORMAL EDUCATION - According to research, if a child underwent a standards-based Kindergarten program, s/he is more prepared for primary education. Thus, it gives a proper pre-disposition to formal education.
LEARNING THE BASICS - Children learn the alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors from their Kindergarten teachers. What is more exciting for them is that they master this through songs, dances, games and other techniques which the teacher provides. It is also the introduction of all of these through the child’s Mother Tongue which assures retention and later utilization of the basic skills take place.
FOUNDATION FOR LIEE-LONG LEARNING - The Universal Kindergarten program for all Filipinos assures life-long learning for the holistic development of a child. Research shows that from 0-6 years, the brain grows up to 70% of the adult size. The minimum age for a child to enter Kindergarten is 5 years, during Kindergarten days, the child’s development is assisted through the help of qualified and competent teachers who gives them training that they may use as age progresses.
In the kindergarten classroom, a child is not just there to mingle with new friends. It is also a way for him/her to be prepared for real life!
