The Bright Side of Multigrade
Angeles C. Respondo
Multigrade classroom simply means that there is more than one grade in the room, working independently or together, with each student working towards their individual curriculum goals for their grade level. They are learning simultaneously, both together and apart. It sounds trickier than it really is. Curriculum at each grade level, in some areas, is relative and sequential, therefore allowing a process of basic to advanced skills to take form easily. In other areas of the curriculum, the topics differs however, each topic in itself is relative under an overarching theme.
Prevailing challenges can be compared to an airplane who had an emergency landing to save the plane and passengers on board after a turbulence. Challenges can break or mold us depending how we view the potentiality of risks. And if how we can stand the onslaught also confirms the readiness of our learners to keep on going even when their road turns dim that they can barely see what’s inside.
The integration of theme-styled learning helps to blend these differences and find similarities and purpose to learning them. The teacher's role is to guide and engage each student in the area of their grade level curriculum, while encouraging them to share information and work toward a large project that assimilates the variety of skills from each student. Questioning, critical thinking, creativity, sharing, and listening are key contributor to making this learning environment work.
Conversely in the Education Department whose main responsibility is to transfer knowledge and propel the knacks of the young minds is fishing on troubled water affected by how to strike a chord from learning amid scarce resource especially in depressed, deprived and underserved communities.
Many teachers love their jobs. They enjoy watching children change, grow and take one more step towards who they will be as an adult one day. Teachers are real diamonds in the rough but it’s luminescence vanishes into thin air when efforts from molding the innocence into competence become wasted.
Teachers have also their babe in the woods; they aren’t superheroes, energy also enervates. In teaching multi- grade, not only they shift lessons, satisfy bursting curiosity, talk with another batch or give new set of activities, multi- grade teachers also adjust to the temperaments, getting squared off against varying behaviors and personalities of learners.
Teaching is a difficult job molding lives, having the charge of establishing, fortifying and solidifying a detailed curriculum to a class of varying exceptionalities. Some students are really prepared, when others aren't at all or they come with many life issues that adults have difficulty handling affecting their academic hurdle. Not only they talk in front; they must insure that every word spoken is worth hearing. Just as a cellphone that it cannot serve its purpose when falling short of power. When students don’t get the right amount of knowledge, there will be the devil to pay.
On the other hand, despite teaching multi- grade is as hard as nails, responsibility doesn’t teeter; mentors do not quibble nor grumble, an affirmation that they stand firm to their conviction. It is true that the function of the teacher in the multi- grade classroom is multidimensional or to be more accurate it is much more complicated and demanding than the role of the teacher in the mono- grade school respectively.
