Jason Schneider, PhD

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, & Discourse at DePaul University in Chicago. In addition to teaching classes on language, rhetoric, and writing, I carry out research in the fields of international student mobility, applied linguistics/TESOL, and rhetorical studies. Recently, my focus has been the experiences of international college students in the US, including their development as academic writers and their efforts to define their own paths through higher education. My book on the topic was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2025.

Bio

I began my teaching career in 1997. Shortly after finishing a BA in English at Emory University, I moved to Kraków, Poland, where I taught English for four years. While living in Poland, I also became fluent in Polish, thanks in part to a year of study at the Jagiellonian University. In 2001, I returned to the US and completed an MA in Applied Linguistics/TESOL at the University of California-Davis, where I also taught English to international students. Later, I moved to Chicago, where I continued teaching English to international students, while also starting work on a PhD in Rhetoric at the University of Illinois at Chicago. My dissertation was an ethnographic study of the Chicago Polish immigrant community, and in particular, the political rhetorics of a grassroots group of Polish immigrant rights activists with whom I worked closely for two years. Shortly after finishing the PhD, I took a position at DePaul University.
