Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for the caregivers of young children with noncompliant or oppositional behavior. Therapists use an earpiece to teach and reinforce caregivers' use of effective behavior management strategies as they interact with their children. In this video, a therapist coaches the caregivers' use of PRIDE skills with her child.
The Incredible Years Program
In this video, Dr. Carolyn Webster-Stratton shows how to use video vignettes to teach parenting skills. The entire video is long, but the segment between 26:45 and 30:53 shows one important skill: how to help children regulate their emotions and avoid tantrums. Her program has been adapted to suit parents from diverse cultural backgrounds.
A great place to learn about children's conduct problems is the Child Mind Institute. The "Behavioral Disorders" section illustrates the main conduct problems discussed in the textbook. The "Skills and Strategies" section describes the importance of giving children attention for prosocial behavior, using time out to correct misbehavior, and selecting a parent-training program that best addresses the needs of your family.
