When teaching standard form students’ attention is drawn to the wonders of the solar system and the wider universe by using examples based around the speed of light and distances between celestial bodies.
Scientists use standard form to write very small or very large numbers. Students need to be able to estimate results in science. In science different measures need to be compared. In order to do this orders of magnitude are used (powers of ten are compared).
