OVERVIEW

Higher: Students will learn how to use standard units of measure, infer properties of populations or distributions from a sample, interpret tables, charts and diagrams, including grouped discrete data and continuous data. They will apply statistics to describe a population. Students will learn how to calculate exactly with fractions, work interchangeably with terminating decimals, change recurring decimals into their corresponding fractions, identify fractions in ratio problems, express one quantity as a fraction of another, define percentage as ‘number of parts per hundred’ and solve problems involving direct proportion.

Foundation: Students will cover the same as higher but do not go through averages and range, and ratio and proportion.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Averages are used in different points of personal life (average miles to get to work/school) and students will be able to use this with more accuracy. Percentages are used in daily life, mostly when shopping, and students again will learn how to use these confidently.

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER (CROSS CURRICULAR)

In Science students will need to identify if weight and extension are in direct proportion. In Chemistry students calculate percentage yield of different elements. Students are likely to collect, interpret and analyse data in subjects such as geography and science. In Science they also use scatter graphs to determine the correlation between two variables.

In Geography students use percentages when studying ecosystems and looking at change in GDP. In Geography they use ratio to compare countries’ unemployment.
