Denbigh Citizenship Curriculum Journey - Year 9

OVERVIEW

The GCSE requires a study of both thematic based units and active citizenship in preparation for the exam. Students must investigate aspects of active citizenship within each theme. This unit covers the beginnings of Life in Modern Britain. It aims to enable students to think about the values and morals that underpin the British Society alongside their own values. It also aims to investigate. This unit continues with Life in Modern Britain. It aims to enable students to think about the role of the media in terms of holding people in power to account, alongside the freedom and restraints the media has. It also aims to investigate what role the UK has in relation to the rest of the world and how they as British citizens can make a difference to others. Their identity is and how these can change.

WIDER READING

Reading a variety of current affairs stories in the media from a variety of perspectives. Students must read articles from a newspaper (both broadsheet and tabloid) daily. This enables students to stay up to date with worldly events.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

This unit develops spirituality in pupils as will explore the world around them and where they fit into the world. This will be through the study of BREXIT and the UK role within international organisations. Students will develop morality through the study of the UKs role in international organisations and the role the UK plays in world conflict. Students will also apply the idea of individual liberty when studying Life in modern Britain and what it means to be able to freely express their opinions in Britain. They will also investigate the liberty of the media. Students will have to engage with the laws around the press censorship, BREXIT, Democracy and world conflict.

DIVERSITY

Social and cultural skills will be developed through the study of British values as students apply them to modern life in Britain and the role Britain plays across the world. In the context of British values pupils also display mutual tolerance and respect when considering different viewpoints about life in modern Britain and identity when they may be polar opposite to their own views. Especially in regards to issues such as Brexit and press regulation/censorship.
