OVERVIEW
Students will explore how different structural differences between types of cell enables them to perform specific functions and look at the role of enzymes in maintaining the function of living organisms. Students will explore how plants use the sun’s energy in photosynthesis in order to make food and how both animals and plants use the oxygen produced to carry out aerobic respiration which transfers the energy that the organism needs to perform its functions. They will also learn that anaerobic respiration does not require oxygen to transfer energy and that during vigorous exercise the human body switches to anaerobic respiration. They will also learn about how anaerobic respiration causes the build-up of lactic acid in muscles which causes fatigue.
