Students learn that materials including carbon and water are continually recycled by the living world, being released through respiration of animals, plants and decomposing microorganisms and taken up by plants in photosynthesis. They will look at how complex communities of animals and plants are dependent on each other for survival within an ecosystem and the impact that a small change may have on the populations of organisms within a given ecosystem.
