Kristie Morsher • STEAM+ Art Specialist
Educational Background
& Professional Experience
Kristie Morsher is a Visual Art specialist with over 20 years experience instructing Art in diverse elementary environments and currently holds a Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art.
In 2000, Ms. Morsher earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. She then became the Art teacher at Elida Elementary in Elida, Ohio. After moving to Chicago in 2003, Ms. Morsher spent the next 18 years instructing Art for Chicago Public Schools. She taught K-8th grade Art for 10 years at Dodge Renaissance Academy followed by 8 years at National Teachers Academy.
During the summer of 2021, Kristie packed up her life in Chicago and headed west on Route 66. Since moving to San Diego, Ms. Morsher has continued teaching Art. She taught K-6th grade Art for 2 years at Flora Vista Elementary followed by 1 year at Urban Discovery Academy. Even though both schools were wonderful experiences, she couldn’t let the opportunity to teach in Del Mar Union School District pass her by!
Ms. Morsher is thrilled to be a part of DMUSD’s collaborative, supportive and inspiring school environment and recognizes the value in providing hands-on Art opportunities to young creative thinkers.

What to expect in the STEAM+ Hawk and Shark Art Studios
Aligned with Del Mar’s STEAM+ program, my Art studio experience provides an approach built on the TAB philosophy of Art Education to maximize creative thinking. Creativity can flourish in a variety of Art centers including drawing, painting, collage, printing, fiber, sculpting and 3-D building.
The studio is structured with clear expectations and routines which allow students to direct their own learning and develop a personal, artistic style. Collaboration between students is encouraged for building trust and understanding of others through Art critiques and self-reflections. More collectively, working together with classroom teachers is essential for boosting productivity and innovative thinking.
What do Artist do? In both studios, students are encouraged to take what’s on their minds and in their hearts to create their Art. This blends with the California Arts Standards and the 8 Studio Habits of Mind to help develop lifelong learners and intrinsically motivate students to think and create like Artists. Each grade level lends itself to scaffolded instruction, but the overall approach is consistent. Initial whole group guidance is brief allowing for more creative time, while individual direction is given to meet the needs of all students.
Consistent with DMUSD’s shared commitment to a culture of excellence grounded in empathy, compassion, and common purpose, Art can unite a community. I am a calm, kind and passionate teacher who wants the best for students. I go above and beyond in what I do and who I do it for – my budding Artists. Showcasing student creations in displays and exhibitions are valuable ways that I reach the community and strengthen school culture while instilling a sense of pride in each young Artist.
Life Outside the Hawk's Nest & Shark Tank
I love the beach, waves & sunny days! I enjoy CrossFit and look forward to working out. I have fun cruising the coast with my boyfriend BJ in our 1962 Ford Econoline pickup 🤙
