Our project focuses on shifting our assessment practices from alpha-numerical grades to assessment based in the mastery of content-area standards. We are currently piloting this shift with a small number of learners in an interdisciplinary program. Our learners are expected to master standards in STEAM, French, and Equity Studies. We are in the process of developing a conferencing protocol that allows learners to evaluate their own learning using artifacts in their ePortfolios. The decision to shift to this type of assessment is based on our shared concern that traditional grading practices perpetuate systemic injustices. Our goal is therefore to create a conferencing and self-assessment model that works in small classes but is also scalable for larger classes, thus ensuring that all students are assessed under a more equitable system.
