Project Summary:
My proposal is to develop a mobile makerspace for our school that can be incorporated in all classes (K-8) including FSL (French). Based on the success and impact of the mobile makerspace in the school the plan would be to develop multiple makerspaces within the school and then expand to multiple schools throughout the board.
What is a Makerspace:
A makerspace is traditionally a room that contains tools, equipment, materials that allows people to enter with an idea and leave with a complete project. The goal is to work together to learn, collaborate, and share. Creating a mobile makerspace will allow accessibility to larger groups of people along with increased frequency of use (e.g., don't have to worry about booking a room, if someone else is in the space etc.)
Rationale for the Project:
The Ministry of Education (Ontario) has prioritized STEAM as a vital part of the Ontario Curriculum. Some boards and staff have had these practices embedded into their teaching for years; however, there are many staff that are unsure how to incorporate this into their routine practice. Creating a school wide makerspace with meaningful activities and supplies will allow for the following:
Increased comfort with Implementing STEM activities
Create greater equity, inclusion, consistency throughout the school and amongst students.
Provide learning opportunities that are more complex, richer and connected to real life challenges.
Global Competency Focus:
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Global Citizenship and Character
Communication
Collaboration and Leadership
Creativity, Inquiry and Entrepreneurship
Building
Coding
Experiment Dissolving
Lego Creation
Robotic Arm
Stop Motion Animation
