WSMA Middle Level State Honors

Of the Wisconsin honor bands, this is the most elite. Acceptance into this group is an enormous honor, and sets students up for success in auditioning for High School Level State Honors. Acceptance into these groups looks excellent for college applications, especially for students that wish to pursue music in college. Private lessons are highly encouraged for students identified as candidates for auditioning.

This is an excellent opportunity for high achieving middle school musicians from around the state to meet other talented musicians and perform with nationally recognized conductors. DMS has had twelve students earn the right to participate in the project and it was a fantastic experience for all of them. The Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) formed this project for the following 3 purposes: (taken from the WSMA website)

    • 1. Challenge musically talented Wisconsin students to share their dedication to a high level of musical performance.
    • 2. Provide opportunities for families, schools and communities to share pride in the efforts and accomplishments of their students.
    • 3. Offer models of leadership and excellence for music education and music performance.

Where: Waunakee High School Performing Arts Center (auditions in Sun Prairie or Dousman, WI)

Tips for Success

Audition requirements vary instrument to instrument. Generally, from what other students have shared, it is SCALES that tend to be the weak point. They are important, as they are the building block to all other technical skills. Make sure you are practicing your scales (major and minor in the back of the book, chromatic scale with all the notes you can do, and scales in thirds) far in advance of the date. You will likely not be successful if you wait even a few weeks prior to your audition.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO OBTAIN AN ORIGINAL COPY OF YOUR SOLO. Measures should be numbered. Make sure to NOT have your name, school, or music teacher on the music. This should be provided by Mr. Skaleski or your private lesson teacher. Please check at least 3 weeks in advance, otherwise an original copy may have to be ordered.

PERCUSSION: You MUST bring your own mallets, drum sticks, and timpani sticks. Other equipment is provided.
