What is Think 80/20?
If you're a Deerfield student or faculty member, you have definitely seen signs on trash, recycling and compost bins that say "Think 80/20." But, what does that actually mean?
The Think 80/20 initiative at Deerfield aspires to recycle or compost 80% of waste on campus and throw 20% of waste in landfills. How can we apply this rule in our everyday lives? First, know what type of waste belongs in each category. Second, apply your knowledge in everyday scenarios such as composting a banana peel (food waste) instead of throwing it in the trash.

Recycling tips:
Pay attention to packaging!
If an item is recyclable, typically it will have a symbol with a number in the middle. Any item with the recycling symbol is recyclable, so don't be thrown off by the numbers. The numbers are there to identify different types of plastic, which makes the recycling process more efficient.
Separate the recyclable parts and un-recyclable parts in one product and dispose of them accordingly. Some food products, such as gum, will have recyclable paper packaging, but un-recyclable food wrapping, so separate them before throwing the recyclable part in the recycling bin.

Composting tips:
Compost any food waste.
Orange peels, banana peels, and any food you want to throw away.
Pay attention to packaging!
If a product is compostable, usually it will have a small note/symbol on the packaging indicating that it's compostable.
