ELA with Mrs. Kearns

Hello! My name is Julia Kearns and I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach grade 6-8 ELA AND grade 8 SS at Dedham! I have been teaching ELA for over 32 years in Maine and have loved every minute of it. I live in Winterport with my husband, cats, Wolfgang and Finley. When we are not working on house projects, my husband and I are always looking for our next adventure. We really enjoy gardening, traveling, fishing, kayaking, and working on our Christmas tree farm. Together, we have 4 amazing children. 2 are also educators in Maine! When we are all together, we enjoy playing lawn games, riding four wheelers, playing board games, singing karaoke, and watching movies.

My father always told me, “Work hard, play hard.” That motto holds true in my life and is one that I bring to the classroom. While I will ask that we all work hard, we will celebrate our achievements with in many fun (and creative) ways. Each grade will read between 3-5 class novels, assorted short stories, and numerous pieces of poetry. Students will have opportunities to experience many different styles of writing throughout the year. I love hosting debates, setting up class plays, conducting mock trials, and journaling for discovery and understanding. In ELA, there will be something for all types of learners.

Open and frequent communication between school and home is super important to me. Each class will have a Google Classroom on which I will post all assignments.
