What is the First-Year Experience Programme?
The UWI Global Campus First Year Experience (FYE) Programme is designed to be your digital compass as you navigate the transition into online university life. Recognizing that distance learning can feel a bit like being cast adrift if you don't have the right tools, these sessions are crafted to build community and competence from day one.
The primary goal of these webinars is student success and retention. The Global Campus environment is unique; you are not walking into a physical lecture hall, so the FYE series serves as your "virtual orientation." It aims to:
Demystify the online learning management system (Learning Exchange).
Connect you with faculty, student support services, and your peers across the Caribbean.
Equip you with the "soft skills" required for self-paced, disciplined study.
Interactive Q&A: These aren't just dry lectures. They feature live chat segments where you can get immediate answers from Registry, IT, or the Library staff.
Peer Perspective: Often, senior students or alumni join the panels to share "real-talk" advice on how they balanced work, family, and a degree.
On-Demand Access: If life gets in the way (as it often does for Global Campus students), the sessions are typically recorded and uploaded to the student portal for later viewing.
Think of the FYE webinars as your "survival kit." Students who engage with these sessions early tend to report lower levels of stress during their first exam period because they already know where to find help and how to submit their assignments correctly.
Pro-Tip: Keep a notebook specifically for FYE sessions. The links and contact emails shared during these live calls are gold mines for when you hit a snag later in the semester.
