15 is a magic number! Did you know that students who read just 15 minutes a day see positive gains in their reading achievement, develop a fierce love of books. and are more empathetic?
Fifteen minutes can be hard to carve out in a busy household, but it is well worth the investment. Children will develop a robust vocabulary, gain new knowledge, build literacy skills, and deepen the bonds between caregiver and child - after all, what is more comforting than cuddling up on someone's lap with a good book?
Children who read 15 minutes a day are exposed to more than 5.7 million words between Kindergarten and Grade 12 compared to the 1.5 million words that students who read less than 15 minutes a day will see.
We’re excited to reinstate our school-wide reading program. Students are encouraged to read for 15 minutes/day at home. Student reading can be tracked on the Reading Up A Storm Logs which can be found above. For every 450 minutes of at-home reading, students will move through various colour levels in order to reach the ultimate reading achievement - Platinum Reader!
All student reading logs can be submitted through the Google Form at the top of this page. Your child's teacher will track your child's progress monthly. Student success will be shared and publicized within the school and on this site.
The Reading Up A Storm Challenge will work with all existing classroom reading programs. Students are encouraged to read anything that they find interesting - graphic novels, non-fiction texts, newspapers, online encyclopedias, etc. There is no right or wrong way to read. If you are needing more reading material, please feel free to explore the Resources page on this website for a list of free books and websites for your child to explore. You can also check out Sora - DDSB's digital library, which has 10,000+ books and audiobooks for your reading pleasure.
