BUSINESS SHSM

What is it?

A specialized program where students take four senior level (grades 11 & 12) business courses, certifications & training and a two-credit business coop placement.

What are the advantages?

• Students develop a deep and dynamic understanding of the business world.

• Looks excellent on applications to both Colleges & Universities.

• Business SHSM scholarships are available at some Ontario Universities (see post at top of the web page).

• Recognized by Ontario’s Colleges.

• Certification/training in CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, Workplace safety, Counterfeit money identification & more - free!

• Field trips & guest speakers.

• Field trips provided at little or no cost.

• Red Seal placed on successful student’s High School Diploma..

• SHSM Business clothing and gear is also provided.​​

COLLEGE DUAL-CREDIT COURSES

What is it?

​The business department offers three dual credit courses, Grade 11 Marketing​ & Grade 11 Accounting and Grade 11 Entrepreneurship (when approved) Students receive both a high school credit and a college credit after completing the course. A college instructor attends the class at the High School twice a week to present course work and to assess student's completed tasks. The high school teacher supports, teaches and assesses student work during the remaining three days.

​What are the advantages?

• It's free!

• Students heading to any Ontario College will be given credit for this course.

• Students receive the course text book free of charge.

• Students can experience post-secondary courses while still in high school.

• The courses are partially online.

• A full day trip to the college campus is offered for little or no-cost.

BUSINESS/DECA CLUB

The DECA club is a student driven club that focuses on the development of life skills and competing in business competitions. The club meets twice a week to learn about current business trends, while practicing their business role playing and social networking skills. Students may choose to compete individually or pairs, picking from a wide range of areas, from hotel management to automotive sales.

Students compete with with other DECA clubs at Regionals, held each November at Sinclair SS. Members who qualify, will attend Provincials for three days and two nights at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto in February. These competitions offer excellent opportunities for members to learn, challenge themselves and to network.
