Sept. 16 Newsletter

This week in math, students will work on interactive assignments online. Students will be able to identify the Constant of Proportionality on a table, graph, and equation. Students will also solve multistep problems involving percents, simple interest, taxes, markups, gratuities and commissions fees. Stefanus and his voyage crew will be gone this week for Voyage, therefore students will be responsible to do and turn in each daily assignment. Please refer to the google classroom for support resources.

Rue was gone this past week for 7th Grade Voyage. She will be gone again this week for 8th grade Voyage although this is not a part of her job, she is stepping up and modeling Crew. Please look for a blog update this upcoming weekend to see what students have been up to and where we're headed.

We are a little over halfway through the first quarter. You can find information on your child's progress primarily in Infinite Campus and Google Classroom. The Habits of Crew grades are submitted weekly and for reasons beyond our control it shows a calculation of those grades that does not align with their actual grades.

Content grades in IC and Google Classroom are determined using our RSS rubric. A score of 3 means that the student met a specific part of the aligned standard with that activity. A score of 2 means they are approaching the mastery level necessary to meet the standard, an NY means they are working but are not yet there. A 4 means a student has exceeded the grade level standard in some way for that activity and a "missing" or "not applicable" means that the student has not attempted or submitted the work. We use Google Classroom to update on assignments, but it is never a reflection of student grades/completed work as they have other ways to turn the work in.

We ask for your support in encouraging your child to develop a growth mindset regarding their education. Specifically, you could ask them what they tried hard at each day and what mistake did they make where they learned something. These are often the first steps for a student in owning his or her education.

As we wrap up our expedition , we are working towards our final project. Students will need to bring supplies from home. The classroom has markers, watercolor paints, glue, and construction paper, but to be truly creative, students need to gather their own supplies.

In Humanities, we have been researching the history of teens. Each group was given a decade to focus on and created some very exciting research. Please do ask your student what teenagers were like in the decade they focused on. We will wrap up that research this week and learn some organization skills in preparation for our end of quarter projects. We will also work on making connections with our end of quarter project to what we've been learning this quarter. Several students do not understand how to make connections, so I'll be talking about that in class!

As always, please reach out to specific teachers with questions about particular content concerns.

Yours in Crew,

Nadelle, Rue, and Stefanus
