Much to my surprise, collaboration with parents came easier than in previous years. Perhaps it is the fact that I am now settling into my role of gifted specialist thus allowing me to lift my head and talk with others. Regardless, having parents drop by for a brief visit, talking with them in the hallways, or inviting them into my classroom to interact with the students was fun to incorporate this year.
Due to my large caseload, my new partner (2nd specialist), scheduling, and classroom issues, finding the time to discuss gifted education with the general education classroom teachers is very difficult. Our schedules rarely allowed for meeting time during the school day, and it feels like there is always a special activity or assembly scheduled during my one day off for consultation, collaboration, and planning. A handful of teachers were kind enough to carve out some time for me this semester. This has resulted in more differentiation within the classroom and a better understanding of gifted education on their part. Additionally, this portion of the portfolio allowed me to foster my relationships with classroom teachers. I tend to have happier, more compliant teachers now!
