Introduction to Teaching as a Profession  is a foundational course in the Teaching as a Profession program of study for students interested in learning more about becoming a teacher, school counselor, trainer, librarian, or speech-language pathologist.  FOE is open to any student interested in a career in education.  Students will gain knowledge in the history of education in the United States, careers in education, and the influence of human development and learning.  Artifacts will be created for inclusion in a portfolio which will continue throughout the full sequence of courses.  This is the only course freshmen are eligible to take.  To take this class, sign up for Course #C32H00.

Teaching as a Profession 1 (TAP1)  In TAP1, student cover the components of instruction, teaching strategies, types of assessment, student learning, working with special populations, and educational technology. Students will conduct observations of educators and create artifacts for a course portfolio. To take this class, sign up for Course #C32H01. Recommened Prerequisite: Introduction to Teaching as a Profession

Teaching as a Profession 2 (TAP2) is an applied-knowledge course for sophomores, juniors, or seniors. This course covers classroom management, higher order thinking, differentiating instruction, and strategies of effective classroom planning. Students in this course will demonstrate their skills in laboratory settings while building their course portfolio. To take this class, sign up for Course #C32H02. Recommended Prerequisite: Teaching as a Profession 1

Juniors and Seniors has the opportunity to sign up for Teaching as a Profession Dual Enrollment I and II (Education 2100: Foundations of Education and Early Childhood Education 2200) through Austin Peay State University. Most students can take these courses free of charge through the dual enrollment grant. Students must meet the following admission requirements to participate in the dual enrollment program:

• 3.0 High School GPA or ACT Composite Score of 21

Successful completion of these dual enrollment courses will earn the student 5 hours of college credit. 

To take this class, sign up for Course #C32H04 and Course #C32H05.  ANY JUNIOR OR SENIOR WHO MEETS ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS MAY TAKE THIS COURSE. NO PRIOR TAP COURSES ARE REQUIRED.

Work Based Learning (WBL) is a capstone course intended to provide students with opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge learned in previous CTE and general education courses within a professional work environment. WBL interns are chosen through an application process and represent all of the Career and Technical Education programs at DCHS. Juniors and Seniors may apply, but seniors will be given priority for the program.  Applicants must have reliable transportation to and from a worksite each day.
