Our Proposed School Name
DCPS has proposed to DC Council that New North MS be named Ida B. Wells Middle School. Ida B. Wells was an iconic African-American investigative journalist, civil rights activist, educator, and researcher.
OpenS THIS AUGUST
DC Public Schools is opening Ida B. Wells MS next school year that will be located on the campus of Coolidge High School. It will be a neighborhood middle school for families currently living in the boundaries of Brightwood EC, LaSalle-Backus EC, Takoma EC, and Whittier EC. All 5th grade families who currently have a child enrolled at one of these 4 education campuses have the right to attend.
We will open with a 6th grade class in August and add a grade each year until it is a 6th-8th grade middle school in SY21-22.
Ida B. Wells MS will open in a fully modernized building. The new facility will have dedicated classrooms for each subject including rooms for art, choir, band, health, and a science lab. The building will have other dedicated spaces for the middle school such as a gymnasium, locker rooms, and a multipurpose space for middle school students and teachers to come together for meetings and activities.

New North MS will provide pathways to the Early College, Mass Media & Health Sciences Academies at Coolidge High School
Ida B. Wells MS will provide students with rigorous academics to prepare them to be a competitive applicant for the selective Early College Academy at Coolidge High School. Students who finish the 8th grade at New North MS must apply for the Early College Academy at Coolidge HS for 9th grade. Current 8th graders can also apply for this program that will open in SY19-20.
Ida B. Wells MS will have electives & clubs that will provide students with opportunities to explore the journalism, communications and mass media industries. Students who finish the 8th grade at New North MS will have by-right access to join the Mass Media Academy at Coolidge HS for 9th grade.
