It is recommended that students have a strong writing ability.
Preliminary Course
The Preliminary course covers six modules including three Religious Tradition Studies chosen from Christianity, Buddhism, Islam or Judaism. There is a study of two Ancient Religions, The Nature of Religion and Beliefs as well as a study of Christianity in Australia prior to 1945.
HSC Course
The HSC course covers six modules including Religion in Australia post 1945 and Aboriginal studies, Religion and Non Religion as well as Religion and Peace. The three Religious Tradition Studies chosen in Year 11 are studied in details during the HSC with a focus on a significant person, ethical teachings and one religious practice.
The Year 12 school-based assessment program will consist of a maximum of four assessment tasks and will require students to respond in written and multi-modal formats. Tasks will consist of:
Analytical,
Investigative research,
Source based skills,
Objective response questions,
Short answer questions,
Three depth studies; and
Extended response question on Religion and Peace.
There is an external examination for Year 12 students undertaking this course.
The Studies of Religion II course provides a context within which to develop competencies essential for the acquisition of effective, higher order thinking skills necessary for further education, work and everyday life. Key competencies are embedded in the Studies of Religion syllabus to enhance student learning.
Other requirements include:
Skills relating to effective gathering, analysing and synthesising of information about religion,
Effective evaluation and application of findings from research about religion,
Communication of complex information, ideas and issues in appropriate forms to different audiences and in different contexts.
Students who study Studies of Religion I have the opportunity to go on to tertiary study in the areas of Arts, Biblical Studies, Studies in Religion, Philosophy or Systemic studies. Studies of Religion can also assist in preparing students for careers in international relations, law, teaching, social work and counselling.
