It is recommended that students have a strong writing ability.
Preliminary Course
The Preliminary course covers three modules;
The Nature of Religion and Beliefs,
Religious Tradition Depth Study which focuses on Christianity; and
Religious Tradition Depth Study focusing on Buddhism.
HSC Course
The HSC course is made up of three modules;
Religion and Belief Systems in Australia after 1945,
Depth Study which focuses on Christianity; and
Religious Tradition Depth Study focusing on Buddhism.
The Year 11 and 12 school-based assessment program will consist of a maximum of four assessment tasks and will require students to respond in written and multi-modal formats. Tasks will consist of:
Analytical,
Investigative research,
Source based skills,
Objective response questions,
Short answer and essay style questions
Two depth studies.
There is an external examination in Year 12 for students undertaking this course.
The Preliminary Studies of Religion I course is designed to promote an understanding and critical awareness of the nature and significance of religion and the influence of belief systems and religious traditions on individuals and within society.
Other requirements include:
Skills relating to effective gathering, analysing and synthesising of information about religion,
Effective evaluation and application of findings from research about religion,
Communication of complex information, ideas and issues in appropriate forms to different audiences and in different contexts.
Students who study Studies of Religion I have the opportunity to go on to tertiary study in the areas of Arts, Biblical Studies, Studies in Religion, Philosophy or Systemic studies. Studies of Religion can also assist in preparing students for careers in international relations, law, teaching, social work and counselling.
