In the Preliminary and HSC studies for Music 1, students develop skills in Performance, Composition, Musicology and Aural Skills through the study of a range of styles, periods and genres.
It is important to note that HSC assessment in Music 1 offers a number of elective options. This allows students to exploit their strengths and to apply themselves in areas where their interest and skills are greatest. This flexibility is one of the most significant strengths of the HSC Course in Music 1.
The course is suitable to any student who has a strong interest in playing an instrument, listening to and creating music.
Music builds confidence and provides a creative and expressive outlet for senior students.
Importantly, music builds skills in collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking, as well as building character and involvement as citizens of our college community.
Music provides opportunities to work together with others to become successful performers and creators of music.

Music 1 requires a commitment to study at least one instrument of the student's choice.
Regular instrumental practice is essential for ongoing development of technical and interpretive skills.
Involvement in ensemble is encouraged in order to develop ensemble awareness and to be able to communicate effectively in a group. Taking advantage of as many opportunities to play for an audience is essential in order to develop performance skills necessary for success in the Music 1 course.
If you currently do not play an instrument but are keen to pursue Music as a senior subject, this is still a possibility. However, you need to be willing to commence your study on at least one instrument (the voice is considered an instrument) from the start of Year 11.
Students of Music 1 have the opportunity post-secondary study to progress to tertiary study on an audition basis. They may enter the music industry as performers or continue with composition as a song writer or transition into the Audio/Sound field. Music careers could include: performers, writers, recording, music education, radio or television.
