In the Preliminary course students study five topics, these include; Modern History, Historical Investigation, World War 1, the Decline and Fall of the Romanov Dynasty and the Making of Modern South Africa.
In the HSC course students study four topics: Power and Authority in the Modern World, Russia and the Soviet Union, Conflict in Europe between 1935 and 1945 and the Apartheid in South Africa between 1960 and 1994.
Modern History HSC assessment consists of a maximum of four assessment tasks and will require students to be assessed on their knowledge, skills, inquiry skills and communication.
Topics, task weightings and specific requirements for each course are distributed to students at the commencement of study via their Assessment Handbook.
There is an external examination for students undertaking the course.
The Preliminary course is structured to provide students with opportunities to develop and apply their understanding of methods and issues involved in the investigation of modern history. Students investigate various aspects of the modern world, including people, ideas, movements, events and developments.
The HSC course is structured to provide students with opportunites to apply their understanding of sources and relevant historiographical issues in the investigation of the modern world.
Students of Modern History have the opportunity to progress to tertiary study in the areas of Education, Philosophy, Arts, History. Students interested in Modern History could potentially move into careers as a Diplomat, Researcher, Writer, Media Officer, Political Affairs Officer or a Gallery and Museum Curator.
