Students in the Japanese Beginners course study six topics, these include Family life, home and neighbourhood; People, places and communities; Education and work; Friends, recreation and pastimes; Holidays, travel and tourism and Future plans and aspirations.
Language is the basis of all communication and human interaction. Students develop skills for successful participation in the dynamic world of the 21st century. Communicating in another language expands students’ horizons as both national and global citizens.
Students of Japanese will simultaneously develop a deep understanding of the intercultural aspects of the language and culture. Students will develop skills in interacting, communication, literacy and interpersonal skills. They must be willing to approach the course with a positive and interactive attitude.
The Preliminary Course consists of no more than three assessments in total, one being a formal examination, covering the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
HSC Internal Assessment consists of assessments in reading, writing, listening and speaking and will number no more than four tasks in total, combining these skills. Only one task will be a formal assessment.
The HSC External Assessment consists of the completion of a Written Examination (2.5 Hours). In addition, students will also complete an oral examination (5 minutes approximately) which consists of a conversation between the student and examiner.
Topics, task weightings and specific requirements for each course are distributed to students at the commencement of study via their Assessment Handbook. If you would like more information in this regard, please contact members of the Language staff.

The course is delivered via an online platform and students will study the course not only with fellow St Peter's students but also with students from other Diocesan schools. The 'blended' course is presented on Canvas and through weekly Zoom lessons, and is an amazing opportunity for students interested in developing their Japanese language skills.
Students of Japanese Beginners have the opportunity to gain recognition for achievements by both universities and TAFE. Some universities offer ‘University Selection Rank Adjustments’ for Language students entering certain degrees. Career opportunities include employment in multinational businesses, tourism and travel, media, foreign relations, government, translation, Not-for-profit Organisations working around the world, education in Australia and abroad, technology, advertising, subtitles and voice overs, event management, nursing, airline services, sporting, retail and hospitality industries.
