The Year 11 course is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop and apply their understanding of the geographical concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection, scale, sustainability, and change. Students investigate natural systems; people, patterns, and processes; and human–environment interactions. They develop an understanding of the nature and value of geographical inquiry through planning and conducting a geographical investigation.
The Year 12 course continues to build on these concepts, offering students opportunities to explore global sustainability, rural and urban places, and ecosystems and global biodiversity. The syllabus includes contemporary content with a global focus and offers flexibility in the studies students can undertake.
Geography provides a powerful context within which to develop competencies essential for the acquisition of advanced thinking skills necessary for further education, work, and everyday life. It enhances students awareness of how the world around them works on natural and human levels.
Preliminary topics studied include:
Earth's Natural Systems
People, Patterns and Processes
Human- Environment Interactions
Geographical Investigation
HSC topics studied include:
Global Sustainability
Rural and Urban places
Ecosystems and Global Biodiversity
Geography HSC assessment programs will consist of a maximum of four assessment tasks and will require students to be assessed on their knowledge, skills, inquiry, and communication skills. Topics, task weightings, and specific requirements for each course are distributed to students at the commencement of study via their Assessment Handbook.
There is an external examination for students undertaking the course, which consists of a three-hour written examination made up of multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and extended response questions.
Geography includes key competencies to enhance student learning, such as collecting, analysing, and organising information, and communicating ideas and information. These reflect core processes of geographical inquiry and are explicit in the objectives and outcomes of the syllabus.
During their Preliminary studies, students will be required to complete a Geographical Investigation and must undertake 10 hours of fieldwork in both the Preliminary and HSC courses. Students will be required to submit both oral and written geographic reports during Stage 6.
Students of Geography have the opportunity to progress to tertiary study in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and can enter professions related to Cartography, Meteorology, Teaching, Environmental Planning, Town Planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Consultancy, and Sustainability Management.
