Preliminary Course
The course has two mandatory sections: Module: Texts, Culture and Value and the Related Project.
HSC Course
Students must complete one elective chosen from the Common Module; Literary Worlds.
The Year 12 school-based assessment program will consist of three assessment tasks and will require students to respond in written formats. Tasks will consist of analytical and creative responses and may include stimulus material and/or unseen texts.
A Trial Higher School Certificate Examination will be conducted in Term 3 of the HSC course.
Topics, task weightings and specific requirements for each course are distributed to students at the commencement of study via their Assessment Handbook.
Preliminary English Extension course requires students to examine a key text from the past and its manifestations in one or more popular cultures. Students also explore, analyse and critically evaluate different examples of such appropriations in a range of contexts and media.
The HSC English Extension course 1 requires the study of three prescribed texts within the selected elective. At least two of these must be print texts.
First 20 students at the end of Semester 1 will be offered a letter of recommendation for this course. Discussion with the English Leader of Learning will be required for students who wish to undertake English Extension 1 and who do not receive a letter of recommendation.
Students who study English Extension 1 have the opportunity to progress to tertiary study at university and could consider roles in professions which require highly proficient communication and literacy skills such as journalism, proofreading and editing, law, novel or scriptwriting.
