There are a range of topics studied in Community and Family Studies.
Preliminary
Resource Management
Basic concepts of the resource management process (approximately 20% of course time).
Individuals and Groups
The individual’s roles, relationships and tasks within groups (approximately 40% of course time).
Families and Communities
Family structures and functions and the interaction between family and community (approximately 40% of course time).
HSC
Research Methodology
Research methodology and skills culminating in the production of an Independent Research Project (approximately 25%).
Groups in Context
The characteristics and needs of specific community groups. For example, people with disabilities, youth, the homeless, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Parenting and Caring
Issues facing individuals and groups who adopt roles of parenting and caring in contemporary society (approximately 25%).
Option Module.
Social Impact of Technology or Individuals and Work (Choose one: approximately 25%)
Internal Assessment
Students complete a range of assessments including case studies and written responses.
HSC Examination
Section I – Core (75 marks)
This section will consist of two parts.
Part A (20 marks)
There will be objective response questions to the value of 20 marks.
Part B (55 marks)
There will be approximately eight short-answer questions.
Questions may contain parts.
There will be approximately 10 items in total.
At least two items will be worth from 6 to 8 marks.
Section II – Options (25 marks)
There will be three questions, one for each of the options.
Candidates will be required to answer the question on the option they have studied.
As part of the HSC, students are required to complete an Independent Research Project (IRP) in the context of the HSC core module – Research Methodology. The IRP forms 20% of the internal HSC assessment program.
This course prepares students for further study in a range of arts/ humanities, social science, health science, sociology and education courses at university and other tertiary institutions. Career opportunities include: Teacher, social worker, nurse, counsellor, aged care worker, community and welfare worker.
