Ned Kelly; the most infamous bushranger to terrorize the Colony of Victoria. He was born around 1854 or 1855. His family had been poor, so when he got the opportunity to do so, he became a bushranger. Lets dive in!
Ned Kelly grew up poor. His family of more children than they can afford and 2 helpless parents were always attacked and insulted by nearby 'squatters', rich people those days that take land and claim them without authority. In fact, Victoria was so infested with squatters that eventually, there was a new government type: squattocracy; where the squatters were some of the most powerful people. Ned's dad, John 'Red' Kelly was a great man. However, the more the family starved, the more desperate Red became, so Red stole livestock from a rich neighbour. A squatter noticed this and paid the police to arrest Red. Why pay? Because police those days only worked for money, offer lots of money, and they will be your servants.
Red was sentenced to 6 months of hard labour, forced to leave his family of 6 children and his pregnant wife. Ned from then on, became the man of the household. He helped the family as much as possible. One of his greatest achievements in those terrible times was the rescue of a drowning boy. He was rewarded a silk green sash by the boy's parents. By the time Red came back home, Red was good as dead. Red no longer can live out the days without alcohol. Red died on Christmas in 1866.
The desprate family now cannot stand it. Ellen Kelly, Ned's mother, moved the family to a suburb called Greta. They moved in with some aunties.
Ned's uncles, his nearby aunts' husbands, arrested for cattle thieving, had a cellmate called Harry Powers. Harry, being the friends of the cattle thieves, now knows about Ned Kelly. Harry escaped prison and became a bushranger. He wasn't a big one though, since he just started. Harry headed off to Greta and met Ned Kelly. Harry convince Ned that being a bushranger will earn enough money for Ned's family to eat. So Ned, at the tender age of around 13 or 14, became a bushranger. Ned's first attempted crime was to steal some horses. Of course it didn't go out well, ending where the owner of the horses chased Harry and Ned away, waving a gun.
Ned refuses to go bushranging again but is forced to after a bit later since his family is struggling. Ned Kelly is now infamous. However, later Ned gets bored and leaves, getting caught in the process. However, Ned's uncle paid the police to release Ned and capture Harry Powers in return, since Ned's uncle had the location of Harry. However, when Harry was caught, Harry blamed Ned for the arrest. This made Ned unpopular. Ned comes back home to enjoy some time with his family. But the cops really still wanted Ned behind bars. So one day, a family friend came by Ned, took one of Ned's horses and left his own; a beautiful horse which Ned decided to ride everyday.
However, Ned having a reputation, catches the eye of a local constable. Ned couldn't possibly got that horse with his pocket money, nor someone will give it to him. So the policeman whips out a gun, aims it at Ned and attempts to arrest Ned. Ned, confused, decided that if the cop shoots, then the cop will get a bad reputation for randomly arresting innocents, since Ned didn't do anything, but borrow a horse from a family friend. The cop fires but the gun fails to fire. Ned, getting irritated pins the cop on the ground. Now the policeman has a solid claim and sent Ned to jail. By the time Ned got out, his family was in a worse shape ever. So Ned attempted to build a new reputation.
Ned soon has a good reputation for doing honest work, stopping fights and keeping his word. He was a very good man at times. But cops and squatters enjoyed attempting to discriminate Ned for having a bad rep before. Ned now was so angry that he no longer cared about being a good person. If these bullies want Ned to be a criminal, Ned decided, it is time.
Ned's first plot is simple: Steal livestock and bring them to another squatter's place. A friend walks by to buy the stolen livestock from this land. Just like that, Ned is legally allowed to sell illegally obtained livestock. He gave money to everyone in need: His family, his friends, poor people; an Australian Robin Hood some might say. However, although Ned's scheme is so smart, the cops found a way to get the supporters of Ned's scheme who were involved in the stealing arrested, so Ned will be alone, and planning schemes will be harder.
The cops managed to get one of the stealings and trace it back to Ned's brother, Dan Kelly. A cop called Alexander Fitzpatrick raced off to arrest Dan, but forgot to bring an arrest warrant. Ellen Kelly was right at the door and, when Fitzpatrick revealed that he had no arrest warrnt, Ellen and Fitzpatrick whipped out their weapons: A spade for Ellen and a gun for the constable. Dan and Ned leapt into action and pinned down the cop, protecting their mother. Fitzpatrick, in the struggle, was shot at by Ned Kelly.
To make amends, Ned digs out the bullet and Ellen gave a bandage. They swore not to tell a soul about this, but now Fitzpatrick has a claim! The cop reports it as attempted murder. Ned and Dan expected this and hid in the woods while unlucky Ellen was thrown into jail.
Ned finds a police outpost and plans something: They will rob the the outpost of all supplies and leave. Simple! There were two cops at camp and the other two had went out scouting. Ned whipped out a gun and orders surrender. One does that, the other hides with a gun ready. Before the cop shoots, Ned "pulls a Han Solo and hits a bullseye". The cop dies. The others come back and were shot too. The remaining guy runs for dear life.
Ned is no longer the guy that stole cattle, he now is a police murderer and a wanted criminal. Ned's next scheme was to attack squatter's banks, since squatters love their money. Ned robs two banks and leaves the scene as quick as he appeared. Although he attacked two towns, most of Victoria likes him! He was more organised the money loving cops and smarter. He also was a nice guy, even if he was a crook.
Later Ned realises a member of his fearsome gang had became a spy for the police, so Ned swiftly shot the poor guy in front of the guys mother and wife. There were cop there, but Ned decided they were too coward so Ned spared them. Ned decided that the cops will go to get backup real soon. The cops will come via a train. The train will pass a town called Glenrowan and go along a cliff; Ned has removed the tracks along the cliff so the train will drop into the valley and Ned and his gang will shoot survivors. Survivors are likely because of the amount of cops, so Ned and company has iron armour to protect themselves from the volleys of gunfire they will receive.
The end of Ned Kelly starts almost immediately. Ned takes Glenrowan hostage with ease, but the problem was with the timing; the cowardly cowering cops did not come out of the house until the next day, unlike Ned's prediction with after a few hours. Then the cops argued what to do next until finally settling with the train, which was the only thing Ned got right. By the time the train arrived around night time, at the siege position, a man, holding red fabric stopped the train. The man was a hostage of Ned Kelly, but Ned, being generous to his hostages, let some home, but it was a mistake because the man betrayed Ned and told the police about the attack.
The cops, did not waste a second and took the inn ,which the hostages were kept and also where Ned and his gang were, by storm. Bullets blew straight throw the wooden walls and, Kelly gang, aware of the cops arriving even before the shootout, donned their iron armour and they traded volleys until a cop noticed that hundreds of innocents were inside. So the cops ordered the innocents to come out and be checked.
The Kelly Gang yet still held fire and shot back. Ned soon had bad wounds in the least protected places. So Ned fled in a hole in the police lines. The Ned realised he left his friends back and ran back only to find out one of his best friends was shot in a main artery and died in a few seconds. Ned, furious at the merciless policemen, attacked the cops. Ned ran back into the inn after the cops revealed that they were too scared to fight the demonic Ned Kelly. Ned did not find his other friends after the rampage and left through his escape route, fainting of blood loss.
The next day, Ned woke up and too awoke the snoozing constables and alerted the scouting cops. Ned, now slowly walked to the cops shooting each one with his guns. The cops were shocked to see him survive several hits of heavy gunfire and Ned laughed at their surprise. For half and hour, Ned taunted the desprate policemen until one noticed Ned was not 100% invunerable. Ned was shot in the thigh and his leg was blown to pieces. Ned gave in and surrendered, now knowing that if he still yet fought back, the cops will surely attack Ned's arms disabling his ability to shoot and then his armour will be removed for an easy kill.
However one cop decided Ned should have a fair trial, although Ned's side lost; Ned was to be hanged. Ned's famously reported last words were: "Such is life."
Although Ned had died at 25, he caused a great effect to Australia, revealing that squatters and the policemen discrminates innocents for the fun of it and creates many criminals from a person with such a high reputation via the Jerilderie letter, a note that showed why Ned is such a criminal of horrid reputation and why the cops and squatters are terrible people.
