Throughout the 1970's, she had 15 singles in the top 40's. Three of these singles reached number one. The most famous being her hit song "I am woman hear me roar ''.
Early Life
Before I talk about her footprint in history its important that I explain where she began.
Helen Reddy grew up in Melbourne in a show-performing family. She was born during world war II and she started singing from the age of 4 following in her parents footsteps.
At 24 years old in1966 as a single mother she entered a singing competition run Bandstand in Australia and she won. The prize was a trip to New York to audition for a record deal. On arrival in America she was unsuccessful at winning the deal and was told to go enjoy the sights of New York. This did not stop her pursuing her dreams. After being rejected by 27 record labels she never gave up even though without a work permit in the U.S it made it hard to get jobs to show her talent. In 1968 however she was eventually signed by Fontana Records. This australian actor/singer already believed in women speaking out and having a voice that can be heard. She was heavily involved in fighting for the reproductive rights for women. The song "i am women" became the feminest anthem because Reddy believed that women should have the same rights as men.
The lyrics of this song "i am strong, i am invincible, i am women" was sung out loud by millions around the world empowering women to finally have a voice and not to be ashamed.
Rise of a superstar
Helen decided she wanted to make a new era of music about strong and independent women reflecting a positive self-image. She has seen women work and raise families in the war and survive the depression so wanted to praise their strength. It became evident such songs did not exist and all that was available were songs with dainty and weak women. Helen decided if she wanted a song about strong women she would need to write one herself.
The launch of "I am woman hear me roar '' in 1972 made Helen Reddy a Notable Australian as it not only received music chart success but it became the anthem for the women's liberation movement. Long after her music career retired she maintained a public presence in feminist causes and became a motivational speaker for women's equality. As recently as 2017 Helen Reddy was a part of the women's March at Los Angeles. Helen started the women’s rights protest by becoming the rallying advocate, she is the reason most women have ended up having a job and being able to vote for leaders of countries and so much more!
Back in the day music was the only way of expressing their feelings toward the extremly sexist community at the time.
Most womens voices were denied due to the rules back then so thats why helens lyrics in her song "i am women" were used like this "im strong, im invincible" this is because once she was turned down by a music company and those lyrics that i just explained were actually what she said and she had been turned down many times.
Helen Reddy was known as "The Queen of Housewife Rock” and this explains the long lasting legacy of her work and what she left behind.
