EARLY LIFE
You hear the sound of horses trotting and hearts beating as you know this is your one chance to pursue your dream and make a huge difference. This is the story of
Gabriel Marie Waterhouse also known as Gai Waterhouse. This Australian phenomenon was born on the 2nd of September 1954, Sydney Australia.
In Gai Waterhouse’s early days she graduated from NSW University and worked as an actress. She appeared in multiple Australian and English television shows but she didn’t feel as if this was the right thing for her. That’s when she decided to start horse training as encouraged by her dad and husband (she married Robbie Waterhouse in 1980) as they were outstanding horse trainers. She was granted her training license in 1992. While everyone doubted her there was something in her that made her keep going and no one knew who she would become.
In 1994 her father became terribly ill leaving his world renowned stable to Gai. Gai realised that even though her dad was seriously ill she had to make him proud and realise he gave his stable to the right person instead of selling.
She had trained a few winners here and there but there was nothing special until the golden slipper in 2001 when out of nowhere she won a gold slipper trifecta! (In a trifecta you must win a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in the correct order of the day)
This is where she finally received some recognition for what she had achieved.
Gai Waterhouse’s horses just kept on winning over and over again, leading her to be the first woman horse trainer on the racing hall of fame in 2007. Ever since that day she has trained 140 group one winners and she is 3rd on the all time list of trained group one winners.

IMPACT ON FOUNDATIONS
Even though she had made an impact on the racing world she joined a fundraising charity called 4tracks4kids which a lot of horse riders (jockeys) and horse trainers partake in. In this charity people are raising money for kids of Australia so they can help develop medicines and cures for kid’s diseases, training medical personnel and knowing that they have the funds to purchase important medical equipment.
Due to this Gai Waterhouse has made an impact in two areas, firstly horse training. She made an impact on the horse training industry as the idea of a woman horse trainer doesn’t sound stupid to people now and woman now have courage to pursue their dreams in horse training. While still making an impact on the horse training world she is making an impact on the latest research and equipment needed for sick kids in Australia.
So remember, that Gai Waterhouse proved that you can succeed no matter what stands between you and success.
