Caroline Chisholm, the immigrant's friend a philanthropist and humanitarian.
Caroline Chisholm was born on the 30 may 1808 Northampton, England and died on the 25 March 1877 at the age of 68.
Caroline came from a very large family. She was the youngest of 7 children. Her father William Jones passed away when Caroline was quite young. This left their family somewhat poor. Caroline loved helping others and when she was younger Caroline and her mother would and visit the less fortunate.
In 1830 Caroline got married to Archibald Chisholm. And in 1838 Caroline and Archibald decided to set sail for Windsor, Sydney Australia.
While living in Sydney Caroline was horrified to see lots of young women
unemployed and homeless. Often when these women would arrive In Australia they would get robbed. Once Caroline realized this was happening she persuaded the Governor to provide accommodation for these women. She then decided to organize work for these girls.
1967 Caroline was honoured with the privilege of getting on the $5 note. She was the first woman on the note! On the note were images of women, children and ships,as she was a big help to immigrants and the less fortunate. Caroline was on the $5 from 1967 till 1990 which is 23 years!
During the Gold rush Caroline Chisholm worked on improving conditions on ships. She organised for the families of convicts to be transported for free to Australia so they could be reunited with their family.
Sadly on the 25 of March 1877 Caroline Chisholm died from a kidney disease. This left lots of people upset as Caroline was such a caring person. Once she died they transported her body to her home town in England where they buried her. Caroline will always be remembered as the immigrant's friend.
