When he was at school in Sydney he was living with his grandmother Emily May Barton in Gladesville. She was a well-read woman who fostered Paterson’s love for poetry.
Paterson began writing as a law student and His earliest work was a poem criticising the British war in Sudan.
Many of his poems were about the Australian bush and its importance as part of Australian culture. Two of Andrew’s most famous poems were “Clancy of the Overflow” and “Man from Snowy River”
Banjo Paterson Is a famous Australian bush poet, soldier of WW1, father of 2 and a journalist, lawyer and a war correspondent. He is known for his famous bush poems and books.
The early years
Banjo was born and raised in Narambla, Orange, NSW and was the eldest of 7 siblings. In 1871 when he was seven years old his family moved to Illalong in the Yass district.
When Andrew was younger he was often called Barty by friends and family.
Once Andrew was able to ride a pony he attended a bush school at Binalong. In 1874 he was sent to Sydney Grammar School. He was a keen tennis player, but his favourite sport was horse riding. After some time he became one of the colony's best polo players and an amateur rider.
