This project was for a landmark (initially a high-rise tower) along a major road in Chongqing, one of the major cities in China. A series of sketches explored the planning aspects of the project, which was also at the edge of a major park, and adjacent to a planned metro station underneath the road. There is significant topography which was both a challenge and an opportunity. In the end, the client decided to create a different kind of landmark with a mid-rise building that had a dramatically lit facade using billboard technology to project constantly changing artwork. The formal name of the project is called Jianianhua (or in English, the Carnival Building); it is located along Guanyingqiao Pedestrian Street adjacent to Jialing Park/Plaza.
Guanyinqiao is a national level tourist attraction and one of Chongqing's most famous commercial streets, featuring a large commercial area with shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment, and cultural spots. Jialing Park is also the only urban park in Chongqing's main business district, offering lush landscaping and water features.
Brian Jennett played a support role during the marketing/planning of the project while a Senior Urban Planner at Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM).
