What is Fact Fluency?
Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic math facts (i.e. 9 x 8, 9 + 8, 17 - 9, 16 / 8) automatically and without hesitation. Fact fluency is gained through significant practice, with mastery of basic math facts being the goal.
As we work toward fact fluency, we focus on using efficient strategies to help students arrive at the answer rather than rote memorization. Our goal is for students to choose the most efficient strategy for each problem while in pursuit of fact fluency. Using efficient strategies also promotes good number sense which is essential for success in mathematics.
