The most I've learned so far at Dartmouth has been from the individuals and communities who go out of their way to support each other. Thank you to everyone who has listened to me and allowed me to listen to them. - Valen Werner
Every time you cross paths with Val Werner you will learn something new and inspiring about how he thinks, works, and leads. Val shows up, for himself and for others, creating spaces – literally and figuratively – for others to learn, grow, find community, feel safe, question everything, and thrive. His contributions include literally mapping out every gender-inclusive bathroom on campus, earning a Rauner Research Fellowship, leading discussion groups, and ultimately founding new organizations to improve the experience and opportunities for Dartmouth’s LGBTQIA+ communities. One of the things I so adore about Val is that he looks for ways to empower others; through his activist work on and off campus he has made Dartmouth and Hanover a more inclusive, aware, and welcoming place.
Recognizing the need for a more formal activist organization that was more in tune with the needs of his peers and that included trans and non-binary voices, Val helped found “Within,” an LGBTQIA+ student organization which received Committee on Student Organizations (COSO) recognition. And because that wasn’t enough for him, Val looked beyond Dartmouth and saw the need for young voices in the NH American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) chapter.
Val comes across as pretty serious, but he has brought me to laughter and tears with both his clever mind and loving heart. He shows up for others, recognizing a need and following through on meeting that need, all in service of justice, visibility, and – most importantly – to make others feel seen and heard. Val is the campus leader that does it “because I wanted to,” not for accolades or recognition. In fact, I suspect even this acknowledgement of his hard work, much needed talents, and action-oriented nature will have him blushing to no end.
It is no overstatement to say that Dartmouth is better because of you, Val. It is not dramatic to say that you represent the very best of the scholar/leader/activist, and it is no doubt true that your legacy and impact will continue to make Dartmouth the place that it can and should be. Val it is our honor to present you with this Legacy Award.
